Mr. Fitzpatrick graduated from San Diego State University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science, and a minor in Economics. He graduated from the University of San Diego School of Law in 1986 with a Juris Doctor Degree. Mr. Fitzpatrick joined the San Diego District Attorney's Office in 1986, and from 1989 to 1996 he served in the Office's specialized Gang Prosecution Unit where he personally prosecuted dozens of San Diego's most violent street gang crimes, most of which were homicides.
